This talk examines the special way of life of the diadromous fishes that migrate between rivers and the sea. Dr. Ciaran Shaughnessy explores how the rare physiological adaptations these fishes utilize to make the incredible transition from freshwater to saltwater and navigate back to their natal streams, as well as their critical ecological role in bringing marine nutrients back into freshwater ecosystems.
Ciaran grew up in the communities around the Presumpscot River, and now is a biologist studying the ecology, evolution, and physiology of fishes. He earned his Ph.D. from UMass Amherst, held postdoctoral fellowships from the NIH and NSF, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Integrative Physiology at Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater, OK. Ciaran serves on the governing boards of the Physiology Section of the American Fisheries Society and the International Society for Fish Endocrinology. Ciaran has contributed a chapter on the biology of the fishes of the Presumpscot River in the book “River Voices: Perspectives on the Presumpscot”. Purchase a copy here!
