Join the Friends & Support the Restoration of a Vibrant Natural Resource!

It’s not often we’re given a second chance with something as fragile as a river. Let’s keep working on it. After all, the Presumpscot River has worked hard in the service of mankind for hundreds of years. It’s time we returned that favor.
— Senator George J. Mitchell

Since 1992, Friends of the Presumpscot River has served as the primary voice & advocate for our small but mighty river—once known as the most damned river in America. Now the Presumpscot is becoming a great source of community pride & enjoyment, as our dedicated team of volunteers continues ongoing work to restore & protect this vital natural resource. Our efforts have resulted in the following successes:

  • Improved water quality by securing watershed surveys, stricter standards for wastewater discharge licenses & water-quality reclassifications.

  • Return of migratory fish populations by negotiating multiple agreements to remove dams & build fish passages, including the restoration project at Saccarappa Falls in Westbrook.

  • Increased public awareness through educational partnerships, media outreach & free community events.

We couldn’t have made it here without the support of our enthusiastic community of Friends! Join us, and let’s keep up the good work for another 25 years. Your contribution will help ensure the Presumpscot River continues to benefit generations to come.
