A Brief History of the Friends

Founded in 1992, Friends of the Presumpscot River is an all-volunteer non-profit organization, supported primarily by membership dues and small donations.
Our mission is to protect and improve the water quality, indigenous fisheries, recreational opportunities and natural character of the Presumpscot River.

Our Accomplishments Include:

  • Obtaining reclassification of part of the river from Class B to Class A.
  • Successfully opposing a project that would have created a new 800,000 gal/day point source discharge into the river.
  • Conducting a watershed survey.
  • Assisting the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) with sampling, creating a new model for the river.
  • Forming the Presumpscot River Watershed Alliance.
  • Working with the DEP to develop stricter standards for SAPPI discharge licenses.
  • Participation in Coast Week Cleanup programs, Casco Bay Estuary Project, Greater Portland Council of Governments Watershed Management Plan, Maine Environmental Priorities Project, and the Maine River Summit.
