FOPR TO SAPPI: STOP THE FIGHTING AND BEGIN THE RESTORATION OF THE PRESUMPSCOT!
On Thursday, January 29,2004 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
(FERC) firmly DENIED Sappi’s attempts to change the license requirements
for all five dams undergoing relicensing on the Presumpscot. Each argument
put forth by SAPPI was rejected by the Commission as having no basis.
The time has come for SAPPI to withdraw its Superior Court challenge of the
State Water Quality Certification; stop any further challenges to the licenses
and work with all parties to restore native fisheries, to improve water quality
and to provide safe passage for eels in the Presumpscot River.
