Below are two petitions to demonstrate to officials of the State of Maine and to the FERC that the people of Maine support restoring the natural migratory fish species and original cold water habitat to the Presumpscot river by removal of 3 dams and construction of fish passages in 2 dams.

PETITION TO FERC

To the Commissioners and Staff of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission:

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission take the necessary steps to restore the migratory and coldwater resident fishery in the Presumpscot River in Southern Maine, by ordering dam removals at Saccarappa, Mallison Falls and Little Falls and by ordering fish passage at Gambo and Dundee dams. This action will restore access and habitat for both sea run native species, such as Atlantic salmon, American shad, alewives and blueback herring and the resident species of brook trout, brown trout and landlocked salmon. The Commission's action would provide recreational and economic opportunities that do not presently exist in Southern Maine, and create a balance for the Presumpscot, while leaving 75% of the hydropower capacity of the river intact.

PETITION TO THE STATE OF MAINE

To Governor Angus King, Commissioner of the Department of Marine Resources George LaPointe, and Commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Lee Perry:

We, the undersigned, ask that the State of Maine, through actions by the Governor and the Commissioners of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and Marine Resources, support efforts to restore a sea run and resident coldwater fishery to the Presumpscot River by supporting dam removal at Little Falls, Mallison Falls, and Saccarappa dams. These dam removals, while leaving 75% of the river’s hydropower capacity intact, will allow historically present migratory species to come back to the river to spawn, such as Atlantic salmon, American shad, alewife, blueback herring and will further allow the development of a superior and otherwise scarce coldwater fishery for brook trout, brown trout and landlocked salmon. We also ask that you take all appropriate steps necessary to make this happen during the water quality certification process before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and require that all appropriate measures to achieve migratory fish passage at Cumberland Mills Dam are taken.
